Sustainable Chemical Metallurgy, 3.038, is a new Course 3 undergraduate restricted elective to be offered  (Spring 2013).

From earth to metal, a path toward sustainability? Metals are the core of our civilization and are revenue source among materials. However, they also rank #1 in terms of environmental impact of materials, in particular for GHG emissions and water consumption. This subject offers a renewed perspective on extractive metallurgy by considering mitigation of its environmental consequences. Starting with thermodynamics and materials chemistry, the subject will explore the reasons for and consequences of the existing processing techniques for commodity metals (e.g., iron, copper, and aluminium) as well as titanium or rare-earth elements.

This subject is pre-approved this subject as a Course 3 undergraduate restricted elective and students who are planning to enroll in this subject should pre-register for 12 units under the special problems number 3.038.
